Report reveals NBA gambling ring involving games with at least 3 college programs

A suspected gambling ring currently under federal investigation for its involvement in NBA betting cases has also been linked to unusual wagering activity on three men’s college basketball programs this season. ESPN reported that sportsbook accounts connected to the ring placed bets against Eastern Michigan, Mississippi Valley State, and North Carolina A&T. The NCAA has suspended three North Carolina A&T players indefinitely for violating team rules, but it is unclear if this is related to the gambling allegations.

The same sportsbook accounts allegedly placed large wagers on prop bets involving former NBA player Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier. Porter has admitted to manipulating his performance for gambling purposes and has been banned from the NBA, while Rozier has declined to comment on reported investigations into unusual betting on his performance. The gambling ring also wagered on a Temple game last March that was flagged for suspicious betting.

The NCAA has stated that it takes sports betting seriously and is committed to protecting student-athlete well-being and competition integrity. Concerns about increased stress on athletes and potential wrongdoing have arisen due to the growth of legal sports betting. In 2023, several Iowa State and Iowa athletes were charged with illegal sports wagering, and Alabama fired its baseball coach amid an investigation into suspicious bets on a Crimson Tide game.

The NCAA will not comment on current or potential investigations due to confidentiality rules. The association works with integrity monitoring services, state regulators, and other stakeholders to investigate suspicious reports.
