The Sun website to introduce £2 monthly subscription for exclusive content featuring Clarkson

The UK’s biggest tabloid, the Sun, is launching a paid-for content strategy called Sun Club, where readers will have to pay £2 a month to access columns by star writers like Jeremy Clarkson, popular content such as Dear Deidre, and exclusive stories and investigations. The membership program, initially priced at £1.99 a month, will also offer access to exclusive video content and deals like the Holidays from £9.50 promotion. The Sun’s editor-in-chief, Victoria Newton, stated that Sun Club will expand the paper’s offer to audiences even further.

This move follows the launch of a registration wall on the Sun’s website that requires visitors to sign up to read certain stories. The Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday have also implemented a partial paywall strategy, with Mail+ charging £4.99 a month for access to exclusive content. Despite initial losses in digital traffic, the Times and Sunday Times’ paywall strategy has proven financially successful.

The Sun’s previous paid-for content effort, Sun+, attracted about 200,000 paying subscribers but ultimately led to a loss in overall readership to free rivals. The new Sun Club is aimed at providing readers with high-quality content and exclusive access to their favorite writers and features. News UK, the owner of the Sun, had previously seen success with their paywall strategy for the Times and Sunday Times, leading them to further explore paid-for content options.
