DUI Crash Involving Mortgage Executive Results in Death of 88-Year-Old Victim


A mortgage lending executive, Serene Francie Rosenberg, was arrested on suspicion of murder after allegedly driving drunk through an intersection in Dana Point, California, and striking a transit van, killing an 88-year-old man. The incident occurred in Southern California, about 60 miles south of Los Angeles. The victim, Melvin Joseph Weibel, was declared dead at the scene, while the driver of the van sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries. Rosenberg was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence and murder.

Rosenberg has a history of prior convictions, including driving under the influence of alcohol. She was placed on administrative leave from her role as President of OCMBC, a wholesale mortgage lender, following the incident. The company named John Hamel as the new President in her absence.

The collision is under investigation by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team. Court records show that Rosenberg faces charges including murder and driving under the influence causing injury. OCMBC Inc. is the eighth-largest wholesale mortgage lender, according to industry publication National Mortgage Professional. CEO Rabi Aziz expressed condolences for those impacted by the tragic event.
