Archbishop McCarthy senior Sophia Gonzalez finished as the Class 2A Olympic runner-up in the 139-pound weight class at the FHSAA girls weightlifting state championship at RP Funding Center in Lakeland. Gonzalez registered a 195 in the clean-and-jerk and 135 in the snatch for a 330 total in the Olympic competition. She also placed third in the traditional competition with a 145 in the bench press for a 340 total.
Gonzalez’s hard work and dedication to the sport were evident, as she previously won the Olympic regional championship and traditional regional title. Archbishop McCarthy junior Seychelles D’Andrea also performed well, finishing third in the traditional competition in the Unlimited weight class with a 425 total and fifth in the Olympic category with a 345 total.
Suncoast’s Andrea Gonzalez and Dr. Joaquin Garcia’s Paige Levitz also had strong showings in the competition. In Class 3A, Palm Beach Central’s Kimberly Berg placed fourth in the traditional competition in the 199-pound weight class, while Park Vista’s Jayda Bell placed fourth in the traditional category in the 110-pound weight division.
Overall, Pace captured the Class 3A championship in both the traditional and Olympic events, while Wewahitchka took home the Class 1A championship in both categories. The King’s Academy was led by Rebekah Foster, who placed sixth in the traditional category in the 154-pound weight class.
These young athletes showcased their talent and determination in a highly competitive event, proving that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible in the world of weightlifting.
