HP Acquires Humane, Creator of the Ai Pin, in $116 Million Deal

HP has agreed to acquire the A.I. capabilities of the start-up Humane for $116 million, ending the ambitious vision of replacing smartphones with their Ai Pin device. Humane, founded by former Apple employees Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, had hoped to revolutionize technology with a wearable device that interacted via voice commands and laser displays. However, the Ai Pin was met with criticism from reviewers for its faulty A.I. software and battery issues, leading to low sales.

Despite raising $240 million in funding and attracting high-profile investors, Humane failed to meet its goals and began seeking new funding or a potential sale last year. HP, a company that sells millions of PCs annually, saw an opportunity to improve its products by integrating Humane’s A.I. technology. HP’s president and CEO, Enrique Lores, expressed excitement about the acquisition, stating that the company is focused on delivering cutting-edge A.I.-powered tech.

Humane has confirmed that the Ai Pin will be discontinued, and the company’s employees, including Chaudhri and Bongiorno, will be joining HP to work on integrating A.I. capabilities into their products. With this acquisition, HP aims to enhance the user experience of their laptops and create an “intelligent ecosystem” across their products and services. This move marks a new chapter for Humane, as they shift their business priorities and close the chapter on the Ai Pin device.
