Governor Ron DeSantis has deputized three more Florida state agencies in the fight against illegal immigration. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and Florida State Guard now have the authority to help find and arrest individuals living in the country illegally. This move comes as part of a new law signed by the governor on February 13th, allowing state and local agencies to work seamlessly with federal immigration authorities.
During a press conference, Governor DeSantis emphasized the need for these agencies to have the power to interrogate and detain suspected aliens as part of their regular law enforcement duties. Larry Keefe, appointed as the Executive Director of the new State Board of Immigration Enforcement, expressed the importance of being able to operate independently from federal immigration officials when necessary.
Leadership from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Florida State Guard also discussed how this partnership will help enforce immigration law, particularly in dealing with migrant vessels at sea. With the new authority granted to these agencies, they can act quickly in situations where migrant vessels are in danger of sinking or overloaded.
Governor DeSantis indicated that the finalization of the immigration board’s operations will be discussed at the next cabinet meeting, ensuring input from the law enforcement council. The collaboration between state and local agencies in Florida marks a significant step in addressing illegal immigration within the state.
