Collier County Sheriff requests increased support from ICE to combat crime within the community

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office in Florida is looking to expand its authority in dealing with illegal immigration as federal immigration raids continue across the country. Sheriff Kevin Rambosk updated county commissioners on the department’s role in immigration enforcement, revealing that they have identified 485 individuals in the county who may require further investigation or background checks.

Currently, the sheriff’s office does not make immigration arrests but can notify ICE if someone in their jail is found to be in the country illegally under the 287(g) federal agreement. With a new administration in office, Sheriff Rambosk hopes to reinstate the enforcement model of 287(g) that was discontinued in 2012 during the Obama administration. This model allows for background searches on individuals with a history of criminality, gang membership, felony arrests, or illegal entry into the country.

The sheriff is particularly concerned about increased illegal activity along Florida’s Gulf Coast under the new administration and is advocating for expanded programs from White House Border Czar Tom Homan. He believes that giving the sheriff’s office more authority in dealing with immigration issues will contribute to creating safer communities for residents. However, any expansion of the sheriff’s role will depend on changes to state or federal policy.
