One killed, one injured as helicopter plunges into Idaho lake

A helicopter crashed into a frozen lake in Idaho, killing the pilot and injuring one passenger. The crash involved a Bell 505 and took place at the Ririe Reservoir in Rexburgh, Idaho. The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash and found two people inside the helicopter, with one occupant pronounced dead at the scene and the other taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The cause of the crash is unknown, but a preliminary FAA report indicated that the aircraft struck a powerline before crashing on the ice.

The identities of the victims have not been released, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing by the FAA and NTSB. Following the crash, authorities shut down Ririe Reservoir and the surrounding area for safety due to downed power lines and unstable ice conditions. The city of Rexburgh is located in Madison County, about 30 miles northeast of Idaho Falls in the state’s southeast region.

The Federal Aviation Administration is leading the investigation into the crash as law enforcement agencies work to determine the circumstances that led to the helicopter going down. Flight safety is under scrutiny as authorities work to piece together what happened in this tragic incident. The cause of the crash and the decision-making processes that led to it are currently under investigation.
