Two people were arrested in Port St. Lucie after a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself at home. The incident took place in the 5700 block of Northwest Zenith Drive. The child’s mother, Natalie Cruz, and her fiancé, Quintenn Wesley, were charged in connection to the case. An investigation revealed that there were five adults and two children in the home at the time of the shooting. Cruz and the 2-year-old were in the master bedroom, while Wesley, his sister, father, and grandmother were in other areas of the home. The toddler was found with a gunshot wound to the head, and later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Wesley owned the handgun believed to have been used in the shooting and kept two unsecured handguns in the master bedroom. Both handguns were seized as evidence. Cruz, a convicted felon in Florida, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and culpable negligence. Wesley was charged with culpable negligence as well. Port St. Lucie Police Chief emphasized the importance of gun safety, particularly around children, and criticized the caregivers for their negligence. Both Cruz and Wesley were taken to the St. Lucie County jail, with Cruz’s bond set at $55,000 and Wesley’s at $15,000. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper firearm storage and safety measures, especially in the presence of children.
