Aurora Phelps, a Las Vegas woman, has been arrested and charged with luring older men using dating apps, drugging them, and defrauding them in a deadly “romance scheme.” She faces 21 counts, including wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud, identity theft, and kidnapping resulting in death. The indictment reveals at least two men met and scammed by Phelps have died. She primarily targeted elderly men but also victimized other age groups and women. Phelps is currently in custody in Mexico, where she met some of the men. The FBI believes there may be more victims of her scheme and has set up a site for potential victims to come forward.
The indictment details how Phelps targeted and drugged elderly men, stole their belongings, accessed their financial accounts, and transferred money to benefit herself and her family. In one instance, she caused a man to become lethargic and confused after drugging him with medication, leading to his death in a hotel room in Mexico City. In another case, she made fraudulent transactions with a man’s accounts after he disappeared following a meeting with her at a hotel in Guadalajara. A fourth man was found dead on his bathroom floor after a date with Phelps in the Guadalajara region, during which she used his financial accounts to make purchases. If convicted on all counts, Phelps could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.
