A recent outbreak of Listeria contaminated frozen supplemental shakes has resulted in 12 deaths and numerous hospitalizations across 21 states, including Florida. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued an urgent warning advising consumers to dispose of Prairie Farms Dairy’s meal replacement shakes sold under the brands Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial.
A total of 38 cases of Listeria monocytogenes infection have been reported, with most cases involving individuals residing in long-term care facilities or hospitalized prior to falling ill. The FDA has conducted an inspection of the Prarie Farms plant in Indiana, where three environmental swabs tested positive for the same strain of Listeria linked to the outbreak.
Symptoms of Listeria infection can manifest within two weeks after consuming contaminated food and may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Consumers are urged to visit the Lyons Magnus website for more information.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel health reporter Cindy Goodman can be contacted for inquiries regarding this outbreak. The FDA continues to investigate the source of contamination and advises caution when consuming frozen shakes sold in healthcare facilities.
