Man sentenced to 100 years in prison for the murder of Dutch soldier

Shamar Duncan has been sentenced to over 100 years in prison for the fatal shooting of Dutch soldier Simmie Poetsema in downtown Indianapolis in 2022. The incident occurred after a night out when Duncan and his associates antagonized the soldiers, leading to a confrontation that escalated into gunfire. Two other Dutch soldiers were injured in the incident. Duncan was found guilty of murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery after a trial last month. He apologized in court, admitting to acting rashly out of fear. Police identified Duncan as the shooter through surveillance footage and witness accounts. The incident was described as “100% preventable” by Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears. The soldiers were visiting Indianapolis from the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in southeast Indiana on a day off. The sentencing brings closure to a case that resulted in the tragic loss of life and injuries. Duncan’s actions were condemned as a result of poor choices fueled by alcohol and weapons, leading to irreversible consequences for all involved.
