Israel announces successful operation targeting Hezbollah militant in Lebanon | Global News

Israel’s military announced on Friday that they had killed a Hezbollah weapons smuggler in a strike on eastern Lebanon. The attack occurred a day prior and is the latest incident since a ceasefire in November ended the Israel-Hezbollah war. The strike reportedly targeted Mohammed Mahdi Ali Shaheen, who was said to be coordinating terrorist transactions for the purchase of weapons. The military stated that Shaheen had been transporting weapons from Syria to Lebanon, posing a threat to Israel and violating the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon.

Lebanon’s health ministry confirmed one death and one injury in the strike that took place in Hermel, the area where the attack occurred. A Hezbollah lawmaker, Ihab Hamadeh, condemned the strike, claiming it targeted innocent civilians. The ceasefire agreement that ended the war between Israel and Hezbollah on November 27 was meant to bring peace to the region. However, both sides have accused each other of violating the truce, leading to continued tensions.

Israeli forces were supposed to withdraw from Lebanon by February 18 as part of the ceasefire agreement, but have remained in strategic locations near the border. Defense Minister Israel Katz recently announced that Israeli forces would stay indefinitely in a buffer zone in southern Lebanon. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah significantly weakened the militant group and led to the decimation of its leadership. The war was initiated by Hezbollah in support of their Palestinian ally Hamas after an attack on Israel in October 2023.
