The UCF Athletics Association Inc. has filed a motion in the Orange County Courts to dismiss a breach of contract lawsuit brought against it by former defensive coordinator coach Ted Roof. The lawsuit claims that Roof’s termination compensation was adjusted after coach Gus Malzahn resigned, and Roof is seeking over $50,000 in damages. The motion argues that the agreement between Roof and UCFAA includes post-employment conditions that impact compensation, and Malzahn’s resignation triggered a limitation on Roof’s post-employment compensation.
Roof joined Malzahn’s coaching staff in January 2024 and was fired in October of the same year. The lawsuit states that Roof is entitled to the remainder of his base salary. The UCFAA’s motion asserts that the agreement survives termination and requires Roof to diligently search for new employment in exchange for severance compensation.
The lawsuit also mentions a letter from UCF retroactively applying terms related to Malzahn’s resignation, but argues that the provision is meaningless as it only applies if Roof was still employed at the time of Malzahn’s resignation. The trial is set to begin in January 2027 with a pretrial conference scheduled for December 2026.
