An undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, Alvaro Alfaro Jimenez, was arrested in Polk County, Florida, on charges of sexual battery and child abuse. The victim, who was brought to the U.S. illegally by the suspect, reported the abuse to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Jimenez allegedly kept the victim enslaved in a Mulberry home for three years, where he sexually abused them starting from the age of 12.
Sheriff Grady Judd described the victim as a prisoner who was not socialized and did not attend school during the time of the abuse. The victim was rescued by law enforcement and taken to a local hospital for treatment, and is now in the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Jimenez’s charges were upgraded due to a new Florida law that enhances charges for undocumented immigrants who commit crimes while in the United States illegally. This case marks the first time in Polk County that charges have been upgraded under this new law. Jimenez faces multiple felony charges, including child abuse causing great harm and negligent child abuse, and is currently held on no bond in the Polk County Jail. This case highlights the intersection of immigration status and criminal charges in the legal system, bringing attention to the issue of undocumented immigrants facing enhanced penalties for criminal offenses.
