The Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) held its annual Florida Lineman Competition in Ocala, where lineworkers from across the state demonstrated their skills in various challenges. The team from Jacksonville’s JEA, a publicly-held utility service, took home the top honors, with the Overall Journeyman Team Winners Cup going to David Hicken, Caleb Macabitas, and Jonathan Cody Stokes. Additionally, Ryan Kornegay from JEA won the Overall Apprentice Award. The competition showcased the lineworkers’ expertise, commitment to safety, and dedication to delivering quality service to their communities. A total of 156 lineworkers from 18 utility organizations participated in the event, with teams competing in tasks such as changing cables, disconnecting power lines, and engaging in rescue simulations. FMEA Executive Director Amy Zubaly commended all the winners for their exceptional skills and commitment to safety. The competition highlighted the vital role lineworkers play in keeping electricity flowing into homes, despite the job being often overlooked. Overall, the Florida Lineman Competition was a success, bringing together lineworkers from various organizations to showcase their talents and compete in a friendly yet challenging environment.
