Miami Heat faces Washington Wizards without Kel’el Ware

Miami Heat rookie center Kel’el Ware was ruled out for Monday night’s game against the Washington Wizards due to a sprained right knee. Despite coach Erik Spoelstra stating that injury wasn’t a factor in Ware’s limited minutes during the previous game against the New York Knicks, Ware’s absence was confirmed on the NBA’s injury report. Ware had a strong performance against the Knicks, recording 12 points, eight rebounds, and a career-high six blocked shots.

Ware’s absence marked the first time he was out of the rotation since December 12, but he has shown resilience and a willingness to learn throughout his rookie season. Despite being the No. 15 pick in the 2024 NBA draft, Ware has had to earn his minutes and has responded positively to challenges, such as being benched in a previous game against the Indiana Pacers.

Coach Spoelstra praised Ware’s competitive character and willingness to learn, emphasizing that the rookie is still in a developmental process. Ware himself acknowledged the learning curve and expressed a desire to improve defensively and have a greater impact on games.

The Heat were also without third-year big man Nikola Jovic, who is expected to be out for at least three more weeks due to a broken right hand. With injuries affecting the team’s frontcourt, Ware’s development and ability to step up when needed will be crucial for the Heat as they navigate the remainder of the season.
