Road Projects Threaten Osceola Residents’ Rural Lifestyle

Jack Facente, a 75-year-old St. Cloud resident, has been running a milking business with a twist – he extracts venom from over 140 snakes, including coral snakes and rattlesnakes, for antivenom production. However, planned road projects in the area threaten his business and the rural lifestyle of his neighbors as the population of St. Cloud continues to grow.

The Northeast Connector and Sunbridge Parkway Extension projects aim to connect critical thoroughfares in a rapidly developing area, causing concern among residents in the Bay Lake Ranch neighborhood. They fear a decrease in property values, environmental impacts, and disruption to their peaceful way of life.

Despite community opposition, the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) is moving forward with the projects to accommodate the increasing population and real estate development in Osceola County. Residents have raised concerns about possible eminent domain actions that could force them to sell parts of their properties for road construction.

CFX and Osceola County are holding public meetings to discuss the projects and gather feedback from residents. While the plans are still in the early stages, Facente worries about the potential impact on his business if the proposed road routes interfere with his property. At 75 years old, he is reluctant to move and hopes to find a resolution that will allow him to continue his unique business while balancing the needs of the growing community.
