After nearly four decades, the largest theme park in Wales shuts down | Theme parks

Oakwood Theme Park, the largest theme park in Wales, has announced its closure after nearly 40 years of operation. The decision was made due to financial challenges including rising costs and declining visitor numbers. Aspro Parks, the owner of the park, cited the need for a sustainable way forward and plans to focus on improving its other attractions.

Since being saved from closure in 2008, Aspro Parks has invested over £25m into Oakwood Theme Park. The park had been a beloved destination for generations and a rite of passage for many young visitors. The company expressed sadness at the closure and thanked their dedicated team, suppliers, contractors, and visitors for their support over the years.

Notably, in 2004, a tragic incident occurred at the park when a 16-year-old girl died after falling out of her seat on the Hydro water ride. This incident led to a fine for Oakwood Leisure and revealed safety procedure violations. In 2024, another incident occurred when passengers on the Bounce attraction were injured due to a sudden halt during the ride.

Oakwood Theme Park had been closed for the winter season but was set to reopen for the 2025 season before the announcement of its closure. The park’s closure marks the end of an era for many who have cherished memories of visiting the park over the years.
