Dolphins opt not to use franchise tag; attention shifts to Chubb and free agency

The Miami Dolphins have ended the franchise tag window without taking any action. The team will now look towards negotiating with free agents on Monday and signing them on Wednesday, which will mark the start of the new league year. The Dolphins are considering restructuring Bradley Chubb’s contract for the third consecutive year, with a possibility of releasing him if an agreement cannot be reached. Safety Jevon Holland is expected to hit the free agent market as the team did not place the franchise tag on him.

The Dolphins are looking to re-tool after a disappointing season and will need to make financial decisions, including Chubb’s contract. Chubb, who spent the 2024 season on the physically-unable-to-perform list due to a knee injury, could be released if a contract restructure cannot be agreed upon. The team faces a decision on whether to release Chubb with a post-June 1 designation, which would have salary cap implications.

The Dolphins’ pass rush could suffer without Chubb, who had a team-best 11.0 sacks in 2023. Keeping Chubb could provide a strong edge rusher rotation alongside Jaelan Phillips and Chop Robinson. The team may focus on renegotiating Chubb’s contract to clear salary cap space and keep him on the roster.

On the other hand, Holland is unlikely to remain on the team in 2025, which could potentially earn the Dolphins a compensatory draft pick in 2026. The team may also consider signing a high-priced free agent as they look to strengthen the roster for the upcoming season. General manager Chris Grier has emphasized the importance of compensatory picks and may make strategic decisions based on this factor.
