YU Maccabees make first appearance in NCAA DIII men’s basketball tournament since 2022

Yeshiva University’s Maccabees are making headlines once again as they clinch the Skyline Conference championship and secure a spot in the NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament. The team’s victory over Farmingdale State Rams on March 2 marks their return to the national tournament for the first time since 2022.

The 2022 team, known for their impressive 50-game winning streak, caught the attention of Jewish basketball fans worldwide. Hollywood actress Mayim Bialik is even producing a documentary about the team, which featured star player Ryan Turell, who now plays professionally in Israel.

The current star of the Maccabees is Zevi Samet, who hails from Monsey, New York, and was named the Skyline Conference’s Player of the Year. Samet’s game-winning three-pointer in the championship game secured their spot in the NCAA tournament.

Coach Elliot Steinmetz expressed gratitude to their supporters on Instagram and shared moments from their victory celebration, including wearing orange practice shirts in remembrance of the Bibas brothers and enjoying a victory dinner at a kosher restaurant.

The DIII men’s basketball tournament kicks off on March 20 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where the Maccabees will look to make a strong showing. This will be only the team’s third appearance in the tournament, with their run in 2020 cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information, visit JTA.org.
