Six individuals in Romania arrested due to suspicion of planning a coup in collaboration with Russia

Six individuals have been arrested in Romania for allegedly colluding with Russia to orchestrate a coup against the government, according to the country’s police. The group, formed in 2023, aimed to undermine the sovereignty and independence of Romania by destabilizing the country’s defense capacity and implementing a new government. The group, which had a military-like structure, sought to negotiate Romania’s withdrawal from NATO and make significant changes to the country’s constitution, name, flag, and anthem. Two suspects traveled to Moscow in January to seek support for their plans. In response, Romanian authorities carried out raids at multiple locations and expelled two Russian military diplomats from the embassy in Bucharest. Tensions between Romania and Russia have escalated, with the two countries trading accusations and expulsions. The situation further complicated by allegations of Russian interference in Romania’s upcoming presidential election. A candidate, Calin Georgescu, who recently had his election win annulled and is under investigation for supporting fascist groups, has been at the center of the controversy. The European Court of Human Rights rejected his complaint, and a court in Bucharest upheld judicial control measures against him. With the rerun of the election scheduled for May, the situation remains uncertain as Georgescu faces legal challenges and a tarnished reputation.
