Supreme Court announces the Dred Scott decision on March 6

Today marks the 65th day of the year, with 300 days left in 2025. On this day in history, in 1857, the U.S. Supreme Court made a controversial ruling in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case, declaring that the enslaved person Dred Scott was not an American citizen and therefore could not sue for his freedom in Federal court. The decision also stated that slavery could not be banned from any Federal territory, which deepened the national divide over the issue leading up to the Civil War.

Other significant events on this day include President James Monroe signing the Missouri Compromise in 1820, the fall of the Alamo in 1836, chemist Dmitri Mendeleev introducing his concept of a periodic table in 1869, the introduction of Oreo cookies in 1912, and the trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg beginning in 1951.

Some notable birthdays today include former FBI and CIA director William Webster turning 101, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan turning 99, former Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova turning 88, and basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal turning 53.

In entertainment, rock musician David Gilmour, filmmaker-actor Rob Reiner, and actor-comedian Tom Arnold are celebrating birthdays, along with rapper-producer Tyler, the Creator and actor Millicent Simmonds. The day also saw Walter Cronkite sign off from “The CBS Evening News” for the last time in 1981 after nearly two decades as anchor.
