2022 ‘Blood Moon’: When was the latest total lunar eclipse?

On the night of March 13, a rare total lunar eclipse will be visible across much of the Americas, Europe, and the UK. This phenomenon occurs when the moon and the sun are on opposite sides of the Earth, causing Earth’s shadow to fall on the moon, giving it a red hue and earning it the nickname “blood moon”.

The last total lunar eclipse took place on November 8, 2022, and the upcoming one is scheduled for March 13-14. The eclipse is predicted to last 6 hours and 3 minutes, with totality expected around 2:30 am EST in the US. The best views of the eclipse will be in North America, South America, western Europe, and Africa.

After the upcoming eclipse, NASA states that another total lunar eclipse won’t be visible in the US until March 2026. Additionally, the next Election Day lunar eclipse is predicted to occur in 372 years on November 8, 2394.

The celestial event is a rare opportunity for sky watchers to witness the beauty of a total lunar eclipse and is a unique and awe-inspiring sight to behold.
