Global Women’s March Calls for End to Violence and Inequality

Demonstrations calling for justice for victims of femicide and reforms to protect women have taken place around the world in honor of International Women’s Day. From Buenos Aires to Lagos, protesters have demanded an end to gender-based violence and inequality.

In Buenos Aires, demonstrators warned against austerity plans proposed by President Javier Milei that they believe will harm women by rolling back vital services. Milei’s government has disbanded the Ministry of Women, Genders, and Diversity and plans to remove the term “femicide” from the penal code, claiming it distorts the concept of equality. This move is particularly troubling in a country where a woman is killed every 30 hours.

Elsewhere, in Ecuador, women marched in Quito calling for justice for victims of gender-based violence and denouncing the patriarchal system. In Bolivia, protesters demanded respect for women’s rights and an end to impunity in femicides. In Europe, women rallied for gender-specific healthcare, equal pay, and an end to violence against women.

In Poland, activists opened a medical abortion centre in Warsaw as a challenge to the country’s restrictive abortion laws. In Madrid, Spain, protesters honored Gisele Pelicot, a symbol of the fight against sexual violence. In Nigeria, women gathered in Lagos, dressed in purple, to celebrate their womanhood.

Women’s Day celebrations in Russia and Ukraine had more official tones, with ceremonies honoring women and female soldiers. The global demonstrations show a united front in the fight for gender equality and the end to violence against women.
