Syria declares conclusion of military operation against loyalists supporting al-Assad | Current Updates on Syria’s Conflict

The Syrian government has announced the end of a security operation in the western coastal region of Latakia and Tartous provinces, home to supporters of former leader Bashar al-Assad. The operation aimed to neutralize security threats that had resulted in deadly violence, with nearly 1,500 people reported killed, mostly civilians. The interim leader President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) has pledged to hold perpetrators of violence accountable and has formed an independent committee to investigate the clashes.

Security forces in Syria have reported repelling an attack in Damascus, signaling growing instability in the country following al-Assad’s fall in December. The violence on the Mediterranean coast escalated into revenge killings, prompting the government to send reinforcements to regain control. Iran, a long-term ally of al-Assad, has denied involvement in the violence and condemned attacks on minorities in Syria.

However, accusations have been made against Iran and its allies for instigating the violence. Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman rejected these accusations as misleading and baseless, emphasizing the need to protect minorities in Syria. Tehran has remained an observer in Syria since HTS takeover and has no immediate plans to engage with the new government.

The situation in Syria remains volatile, with security forces on high alert and tensions escalating in various parts of the country. The government’s efforts to combat remnants of the former regime and ensure stability continue while international concerns grow over the escalating violence and humanitarian crisis in Syria.
