Renowned bald eagle couple Jackie and Shadow, who have a dedicated online following, may have lost one of their three eaglets in a recent snowstorm. The eaglet was last seen alive on Thursday before its death was revealed as the snow melted from the storm that hit the area where their nest is located. The nonprofit organization, Friends of Big Bear Valley, stated that they do not know the reason for the eaglet’s death or which of the three hatchlings it was. Despite this loss, the remaining two eaglets are said to be doing well, with their parents continuing to care for them.
Jackie and Shadow have become popular figures online since a webcam was set up to monitor them in 2016. The pair has faced challenges in the past regarding reproduction, with successful hatches in 2019 and 2022, but lost eggs in 2023 and 2024. The eagles recently welcomed three new eaglets earlier this month. The organization also reported that the snowstorm caused damage to some of their equipment. While it is difficult to witness such natural events, the organization urged trust in nature’s reasons and honored the short life of the chick that passed.
