Officials report huge shark spotted off Florida coast during Spring Break kickoff

Spring Break in Florida has kicked off with the sighting of a massive 1,653-pound, 13-foot great white shark off the coast. Dubbed “Contender” by OCEARCH, a nonprofit organization focused on researching ocean giants, the shark is described as the ultimate ocean warrior. OCEARCH tagged Contender near the Florida-Georgia border in January and is tracking his movements as he heads south.

While Contender is the largest shark tracked by OCEARCH, there is another great white, “Dold,” also making its way south through the area. Both sharks are being monitored as they make their way towards Fort Lauderdale and Miami. The public can follow their movements in real-time through the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker map, which is updated with data from the satellite tags attached to the sharks’ dorsal fins.

OCEARCH’s mission is to accelerate the ocean’s return to balance and abundance through scientific research, education, outreach, and policy. The organization aims to help scientists collect data on marine life to better understand and protect these creatures.

As Spring Breakers flock to Florida’s beaches, the presence of these massive great white sharks serves as a reminder of the diverse marine life in the region. OCEARCH’s tracking of Contender and Dold provides valuable insight into the behaviors and movements of these apex predators, allowing researchers and the public to learn more about these fascinating creatures.
