A Florida man has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty after a homeowner in Bonita Springs discovered a box containing two severed cat heads on their mailbox. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and enlisted the help of the Animal Cruelty Task Force to investigate the disturbing incident. Using advanced technology, officers were able to track down and arrest 37-year-old Robert James Luther III, who was found fishing near the crime scene. Luther refused to speak with police and additional evidence, including disturbing cell phone videos, linked him to the crime. He has been booked on two counts of aggravated animal cruelty and two counts of aggravated stalking.
Sheriff Carmine Marceno condemned the violent act, stating that offenders will face severe consequences. The swift actions of law enforcement units prevented Luther from causing further harm. The investigation is ongoing and it is currently unknown if Luther has legal representation. Further information from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office was not immediately available.
