WFTV reports Florida’s January Unemployment Rate Drops to 3.5 Percent

Florida’s unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.5 percent in January, according to a report from the state Department of Commerce. Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted the growth in the labor force, with the number of unemployed people increasing from 385,000 in December to 390,000 in January. The labor force also saw an increase of 18,000 from December and 66,000 from January 2024.

DeSantis credited the state’s economic strength to its expanded workforce, stating that Florida has seen growth or stability in the labor force in 10 of the past 12 months. He emphasized the importance of reducing government spending, eliminating bureaucracy, and providing tax reductions for Floridians to keep the momentum going.

While the national unemployment rate in February was 4.1 percent, Florida’s February rate was not yet released. The state’s Revenue Estimating Conference cautioned of economic uncertainty despite higher revenue projections.

The report showed employment increases in education and health services and leisure and hospitality sectors, while construction saw a decrease of 5,100 positions. The Miami, Orlando, and Crestview metropolitan areas had the lowest unemployment rates in January, while The Villages area had the highest rate. The statewide rate is seasonally adjusted, while metro rates are not.

The report highlights Florida’s economic growth and the challenges ahead as the state navigates economic uncertainties. Governor DeSantis remains optimistic about the state’s economic potential and plans to continue implementing fiscal policies to support job growth and economic stability.
