A pit bull named Hercules has been involved in multiple attacks on people and pets in Broward County, Florida over the past year, prompting concerns about public safety. One victim, Jodi Balom, suffered severe injuries when Hercules attacked her and her dog, Casper. Despite the attacks, authorities have struggled to designate Hercules as a dangerous dog, due to lack of witnesses willing to testify.
The most recent attack involved Hercules mauling a Yorkie named Joffer and injuring his dog walker, Donna Wilson. Broward County Animal Care is now opening another investigation into Hercules as a dangerous animal following this incident, as well as previous attacks on other dogs.
Hercules’ owner, Wilford Morris, has faced multiple citations and fines totaling over $3,000 for various violations related to the attacks. Despite this, Hercules remains at home with Morris and has not received a rabies vaccination.
If Hercules is officially deemed a dangerous dog, Morris would have to comply with strict regulations including registering Hercules as a dangerous dog, keeping him restrained and muzzled at all times, and undergoing sterilization and microchipping. Euthanasia would only be considered if Hercules were to attack again after receiving the dangerous dog designation.
Jodi Balom and other victims are calling for action to be taken to ensure public safety and hold both Animal Control and Morris accountable for the attacks. Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover Joffer’s surgery costs.
