Walter Clayton Jr. of UF recognized as AP First-Team All-American guard

Florida point guard Walter Clayton Jr. has made history by becoming the first player from the Florida Gators to be named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press. Clayton, a senior from Lake Wales, led the Gators to a successful season, including winning the SEC Tournament title and earning a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. He was named MVP of the tournament after scoring 62 points, dishing out 14 assists, and recording 6 steals in three games.

Clayton led the Gators in scoring, 3-pointers, and assists throughout the season, impressing voters who selected him for the All-American team. His standout performance has helped the team achieve a successful season, with a record of 30-4 heading into the NCAA Tournament.

In the past, Florida has produced top players who have gone on to have successful careers in the NBA, including NBA All-Stars and top-10 draft picks. Clayton follows in the footsteps of Scottie Wilbekin, who was the last Florida player to earn All-American honors in 2014 as a third-team selection.

Florida will open play in the NCAA Tournament against Norfolk State on Friday night, with Clayton expected to lead the team in their quest for a championship. The recognition of Clayton as a first-team All-American is a testament to his hard work and dedication to the sport, and a proud moment for the Florida Gators basketball program.
