Zelensky Plans to Discuss ‘Next Steps’ with Trump Following Putin Call

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine is set to speak with President Trump to discuss the next steps following Trump’s call with President Putin of Russia. The Kremlin announced that Putin had agreed to a limited cease-fire to halt attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, which fell short of Ukraine’s request for a 30-day unconditional truce.

Zelensky, while open to the limited cease-fire offer, emphasized the need for U.S. monitoring to ensure its success. Both Ukraine and Russia exchanged accusations of attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure, highlighting the lack of trust between the two nations.

Zelensky criticized Putin’s conditions for a broader cease-fire, suggesting they were meant to buy time for Russia to strengthen its position on the battlefield. He stated that Russia was not ready to end the war and continued to impose additional conditions.

The 30-day cease-fire proposal, agreed upon after talks with U.S. officials, aimed to cover all land, air, and sea hostilities, marking the first significant cessation of violence since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine over three years ago. Zelensky hoped the monthlong truce would create an opportunity for more extensive negotiations on a lasting peace.

The situation remains tense, with ongoing discussions and negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States to reach a resolution to the conflict. Anastasia Kuznietsova also contributed reporting on this matter.
