Greenpeace fined over $660M for Dakota pipeline protests

Ocean alkalinity enhancement has the potential to make a significant impact on combating global warming, offering a potential solution to climate change. However, environmental group Greenpeace was recently ordered to pay over $660 million in damages to Energy Transfer and Dakota Access for their role in protests against the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline project. The jury awarded damages for defamation, trespassing, and civil conspiracy, with Greenpeace planning to appeal the decision.

Energy Transfer initially sued Greenpeace in 2017, accusing them of racketeering and defamation in an attempt to block the pipeline project. After a federal court dismissed the lawsuit, Energy Transfer filed a defamation lawsuit in state court, seeking $300 million in damages. Critics have labeled these lawsuits as strategic attempts to silence critics and impose significant litigation costs.

Groups opposed to the Dakota Access Pipeline project cite concerns over environmental impacts, fossil fuel use, and threats to water supplies and Native ancestral lands. Civil rights and environmental experts have raised concerns over the verdict, highlighting the importance of peaceful protests and defending the rights of Indigenous peoples to protect their land.

While Greenpeace plans to continue fighting the lawsuits, they have faced significant financial consequences as a result of their involvement in the protests. The case exemplifies the ongoing tensions between environmental activists, corporations, and the legal system in addressing climate change and environmental protection issues.
