Markel Bell of the Hurricanes is getting ready to become a starter

University of Miami junior college transfer Markel Bell has made significant strides since taking over as the Hurricanes’ left tackle last year. Standing at 6-foot-9, Bell was able to showcase his skills after Jalen Rivers suffered an injury, leading to his unexpected start. Now, heading into his second year with UM, Bell is set to solidify his position as the starting left tackle.

Offensive line coach Alex Mirabal praised Bell’s improvement, noting that he has transformed as a player since his junior college days. Bell credits his growth to the faster pace and higher level of competition in the ACC, which pushed him to improve technically and mentally. Despite facing challenges, Bell made the most of his opportunities last season, earning a 61.9 offensive grade from Pro Football Focus.

Bell’s patience and work ethic have also impressed UM head coach Mario Cristobal, who commended his progress during spring camp. While Bell’s size initially drew attention, Mirabal stressed that he is more than just his height. Bell is focused on enhancing his flexibility and mobility to excel as an all-around offensive lineman.

As Bell gears up for his role as the starting left tackle, he remains grateful for the experience and lessons he gained last season. With the support of his coaches and teammates, Bell is poised to continue his development and make a significant impact for the Hurricanes on the field.
