Special Elections to Replace Matt Gaetz and Michael Waltz Begin Early Voting

Early voting has begun in Special Elections for two vacant Florida congressional seats, with the races set to be decided on April 1. In Congressional District 1, Republican Jimmy Patronis faces Democrat Gay Valimont in a heated battle, while in Congressional District 6, Republican Randy Fine is up against Democrat Josh Weil. Both districts are heavily Republican-leaning, but Democrats have poured millions into these contests in an effort to make gains in the wake of President Trump’s election.

These Special Elections were triggered by Trump appointing members of the U.S. House to positions in his administration, creating vacancies in Florida. Despite the districts’ Republican lean, Democrats are seizing the opportunity to make a statement and fight for these open seats.

Valimont and Weil have both reported significant fundraising success, with Valimont raising $6.5 million compared to Patronis’ $2.1 million, and Weil raising over $9.5 million compared to Fine’s less than $1 million. The Democratic National Committee has announced a coordinated campaign with the Florida Democratic Party to invest in the races and deploy poll watchers.

The Republican Party of Florida is also backing their candidates, including a $600,000 ad buy in CD 6 to support Fine. The races have become highly competitive, with both parties mobilizing resources and supporters to secure victory. The outcome of these Special Elections will not only determine the congressional representatives for these districts but also send a message about the current political climate and the impact of Trump’s presidency.
