Donald Trump selects CDC director to collaborate with RFK Jr.

The White House has withdrawn President Donald Trump’s nominee for CDC director, Dave Weldon, and replaced him with Susan Monarez. Trump stated that Monarez will work closely with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda. Monarez previously served as deputy director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health and has been the acting director of the CDC since January.

Monarez’s confirmation process will likely involve questions about health threats facing the country, as well as potential changes to the CDC under the new administration. Trump emphasized that Monarez and Kennedy Jr. will prioritize accountability, high standards, and disease prevention to address the chronic disease epidemic.

Some concerns surrounding Monarez include her possible support for studying connections between vaccines and autism, despite scientific evidence showing vaccines do not cause autism. The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee will be the first to review Monarez’s nomination before it goes to the full Senate for a vote, where 51 votes are needed for confirmation.
