Four alpacas were tragically shot dead in a field in Cambridgeshire, along with a ewe that was attacked by a dog and had to be put down. Another alpaca also received a non-fatal gunshot wound to the face. The owner of the animals, Dawn French, described the scene as “hideous” and “traumatic”. The incident occurred between Saturday evening and Sunday morning in the parish of East Hatley, near Gamlingay.
Cambridgeshire police have launched an investigation into the incident and are urging any witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward. Sgt Tom Nuttall from the police’s rural crime action team described the crime as “highly distressing” and emphasized the vulnerability of the animals involved.
French, who has kept the herd of alpacas and a ewe for six years, expressed her shock and devastation at the loss of her animals. She recounted receiving a phone call urging her to come to the field and finding the four alpacas with gunshot wounds to their heads, as well as the injured ewe. The injured alpaca, Phoebe, received treatment for a facial wound, with hopes that it was not a permanent injury.
The community is mourning the loss of these animals and is calling for justice to be served in this heinous act. French has expressed her hope that those responsible will be identified and held accountable for their actions.
