Columbia student takes legal action against Trump administration to halt deportation efforts

Yunseo Chung, a Korean American Columbia University student and legal permanent U.S. resident, is suing the Trump administration to prevent her deportation after her lawful permanent resident status was revoked. The administration claimed her presence hindered its foreign policy agenda. Activists, including Mahmoud Khalil, who was suspended from Columbia University after pro-Palestinian protests, are facing repression from the government. Protesters, including some Jewish groups, say their criticism of Israel and support for Palestinian rights is wrongly conflated with antisemitism and support for Hamas.

Trump has vowed to deport foreign pro-Palestinian protesters, accusing them of supporting Hamas and hindering U.S. foreign policy. Human rights advocates have criticized the government’s actions. The lawsuit filed by Chung alleges that the government is attempting to repress constitutionally protected protest activity and speech, with a focus on university students who support Palestinians and criticize Israel’s military campaigns.

In addition to Chung, other foreign students such as Badar Khan Suri, an Indian studying at Georgetown University, and Momodou Taal, a Cornell University student, have faced deportation attempts by U.S. officials. Suri was detained, but a federal judge barred his deportation, while officials asked Taal to turn himself in. The actions against these students are part of a wider pattern of government repression against those who criticize Israeli government actions and support Palestinian rights.
