Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has officially signed two bills renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America in state law and public school textbooks. The state is claiming to be the first to recognize this new name, following President Trump’s executive order to restore names that honor American greatness. State senators involved in the bills’ sponsorship posted photos of themselves with DeSantis at the signing ceremony.
Sen. Nick DiCeglie praised Florida for putting America first and recognizing American exceptionalism by officially renaming the body of water. Sen. Joe Gruters emphasized the importance of reflecting American greatness in state government and schools. The bills direct state agencies and school districts to adopt instructional materials that refer to the Gulf of America after July 1 of this year. Textbooks and media center libraries are required to include the new name.
Notably missing from the bill signing were members of the Florida House, highlighting tensions between the governor and GOP House leadership. This conflict has been ongoing, with disagreements over initiatives such as the conservative alternative to welfare proposed by the First Lady, Casey DeSantis.
The bills changing the Gulf of Mexico’s name to the Gulf of America demonstrate a commitment by Florida to celebrate and acknowledge American greatness. The state is paving the way for other states to follow suit in recognizing the new name for the body of water that borders almost half of Florida.
