Owner of funeral home admits to keeping body in hearse

A Colorado funeral home owner, Miles Harford, has been ordered to pay $950 million in compensation for mishandling dead bodies, including improperly storing cremated remains and keeping a woman’s body in a hearse for over a year. Harford pleaded guilty to abuse of a corpse and theft charges and faces up to 18 months in prison. This incident follows a string of gruesome funeral home incidents in Colorado, including owners failing to cremate or bury nearly 200 bodies and giving fake ashes to families. Lawmakers in Colorado have since tightened regulations on the funeral home industry, requiring licensing for workers. In another case, funeral home operators were accused of defrauding families by not providing promised cremations or burials and burying the wrong body on at least two occasions. In a separate incident, the operator of a funeral home and her mother were sentenced to federal prison for illegally selling body parts or entire bodies without consent. These cases have prompted increased scrutiny and regulation of the funeral home industry in Colorado to prevent mishandling of human remains and abuses of trust from occurring in the future.
