Betsy Arakawa’s Dog Protects Property from Rodents- NBC 6 South Florida

The Hollywood legend Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found to have rodents on their Santa Fe property, according to a state assessment. However, the main quarters were found not to be infested. The inspection came after the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa in February due to health issues related to cardiovascular disease and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, respectively.

The inspection revealed rodent activity in the detached garage, guest houses, and storage facilities on the property. Despite this, the main dwelling was reported to be clean with no signs of rodent activity. The couple’s daughters described their father as in decline, noting his unfamiliarity with technology and avoidance of cellphones.

Upon the discovery of the bodies of Hackman and Arakawa by a maintenance worker, it was found that one of their dogs had died in a crate, possibly from lack of food and water. The surviving dogs were taken in by a friend with the family’s permission.

The state health inspectors also noted that Arakawa was last seen in public making a trip to a grocery store and a pet food store. The couple was described as very private and did not hire housekeepers, despite the presence of rodent traps on the property.

Overall, the inspection report highlights the rodent activity on the property and the tragic circumstances surrounding the deaths of the Hollywood couple.
