Gaza described as a ‘mass grave’ of Palestinians by MSF charity

Medical charity MSF has described Gaza as a “mass grave” for Palestinians and those trying to help them, as at least 13 people were killed by Israeli military airstrikes. Among the victims was well-known writer and photographer Fatema Hassouna. In Rafah, more homes were demolished by the Israeli military, leading to forced displacements and insecurity for the population.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza reported that Israel’s suspension of essential supplies like fuel, medical equipment, and food since March had severely impacted the few remaining working hospitals, leaving patients without necessary medications. Israel defended these measures as a way to pressure Hamas, while Hamas condemned them as collective punishment.

Efforts to restore the ceasefire in Gaza and free Israeli hostages have faltered, with Hamas and Israel maintaining their positions. Hamas wants discussions on Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza and an end to the war, while Israel insists the war can only end when Hamas is defeated.

Since the military offensive restarted in March, Israeli forces have killed over 1,600 Palestinians and displaced hundreds of thousands. The blockade on supplies entering Gaza has worsened the humanitarian crisis. Additionally, 59 Israeli hostages remain in Gaza, with Israel believing 24 of them are still alive. The war was sparked by Hamas’ attack on southern Israel in October 2023, leading to a cycle of violence and casualties on both sides.
