Miami-Dade flags will be flown at half-staff to honor the recent passing of Miami City Commissioner Manolo Reyes. Governor Ron DeSantis ordered flags to be lowered at all local and state buildings on Wednesday. Reyes, who served as a Miami City Commissioner since 2017, was remembered as a dedicated public servant who spent his career improving the lives of his community. He passed away last week at the age of 80 after a battle with leukemia. Born in Cuba, Reyes came to the U.S. in 1959 and later earned a graduate degree in economics from the University of Florida. He fulfilled his lifelong dream of serving as a Miami Commissioner and had plans to run for Mayor last year. A memorial service will be held to celebrate his life and legacy. The City Commission will meet to decide on appointing someone to serve out the remainder of Reyes’ term or holding a Special Election to select his successor. Governor DeSantis expressed his condolences to Reyes’ family, who survived by his wife, two children, and three grandchildren. Reyes’ dedication to public service and commitment to his community will be remembered and honored.
