FSU President Announces Reopening of Student Union Amid Community Reflection
TALLAHASSEE, FL — In the wake of the tragic events on April 17, Florida State University (FSU) President Richard McCullough addressed the campus community, emphasizing the profound impact of the loss while celebrating the solidarity displayed by students, faculty, and staff.
“Amid the sorrow, we have witnessed incredible support and unity — a testament to the indomitable spirit of FSU,” McCullough stated in a letter to the FSU family. After thoughtful consideration and extensive conversations with students, the decision has been made to reopen the Student Union from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday, April 28. A moment of reflection will take place at 3 p.m. as the community prepares to resume this essential gathering space.
McCullough explained the vital role the Student Union plays in fostering connection and growth among students, particularly for graduating seniors keen on cherishing their last week on campus. He acknowledged that the reopening decision was challenging, given varying emotions within the community.
To ensure a respectful atmosphere, attendance for employees and volunteers will not be mandatory until they feel ready to return. McCullough assured that inclusivity and sensitivity to individual experiences are paramount as the university navigates this difficult time.
Students uncomfortable with the reopening are encouraged to return when they feel prepared. The university recognizes that healing occurs at different paces, and the aim is to create a supportive environment for all.
“As we take this step forward, we will continue to reflect and heal together,” McCullough concluded, reaffirming the commitment to honoring the needs of the entire FSU community. Additional operating hours will be announced later this week, reinforcing FSU’s dedication to support and unity during this challenging period.
