Marlins Edge Mariners 8-4 Despite Gilbert’s Strong Start
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners faced a setback Friday night as they lost to the Miami Marlins 8-4 after starter Logan Gilbert exited due to right forearm tightness following three perfect innings. Seattle took an early lead with a second-inning home run from second baseman Dylan Moore, who was recently named the AL player of the week, marking his sixth homer of the season.
The turning point for the Mariners came in the fifth inning. With two outs and reliever Casey Lawrence on the mound, a grounder by Matt Mervis resulted in an error from Moore, allowing the Marlins to capitalize. The error opened the floodgates, leading to six unearned runs—highlighted by RBI singles from Liam Hicks and Javier Sanoja, followed by a two-run single from Xavier Edwards. Jesús Sánchez capped the rally with his first home run of the season, extending Miami’s lead to 6-1.
The Mariners rallied in the sixth inning, narrowing the gap to 6-4 with a three-run homer from Jorge Polanco, his fifth of the year. However, Marlins rookie catcher Agustín Ramírez responded in the eighth, hitting a two-run homer for his first career blast, sealing the score at 8-4.
On the mound, Cleveland’s Cal Quantrill secured the win with four runs allowed over 5 2/3 innings. In contrast, Lawrence pitched five innings, yielding eight runs—two earned—along with ten hits.
Looking ahead, the Mariners will send right-hander Luis Castillo to the mound as they aim to even the series against Miami’s Connor Gillispie on Saturday.
