After a weather-related delay, Amazon plans to launch 27 Project Kuiper satellites from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Monday evening, between 7 and 9 p.m. ET. The satellites will be deployed on an Atlas V rocket, with live coverage starting at 6:35 p.m. Weather forecasts currently indicate a 70% chance of favorable conditions for the launch.
Project Kuiper is designed to deliver internet connectivity, particularly to remote areas, through integration with Amazon Web Services, enhancing appeal to businesses requiring large data transfers and real-time analytics. Ground stations will enable direct communication with remote operations, which could benefit industries such as energy.
Earlier prototypes were successfully launched in October 2023 for technological testing but were not part of the final constellation. According to Rajeev Badyal, an Amazon executive overseeing the project, "There’s a big difference between launching two satellites and launching 3,000."
Amazon expects to begin offering internet service once 578 satellites are in orbit, with projections of connecting customers by the end of this year. The Federal Communications Commission has set a deadline of July 30, 2026, for deploying half of the satellites, allowing for potential extensions if significant progress is demonstrated.
As the competition heats up, the stakes in the battle for space internet are rising, with both giants poised to reshape global connectivity.
