Two Men Convicted for Felling Iconic Sycamore Gap Tree

Arbor Day originated in Nebraska in the late 1800s to celebrate trees and promote tree planting. Recently, it gained attention in the UK following the conviction of two men, Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers, for feloniously cutting down the Sycamore Gap tree, an iconic landmark in northern England. Convicted on May 9 for criminal damage, the two men were found guilty after felling the beloved tree on September 27, 2023. This tree, estimated to be around 200 years old, was located near Hadrian’s Wall and had become a symbol of nostalgia and community, marking significant moments such as first kisses and marriage proposals.

The Sycamore Gap tree was not only a picturesque spot for visitors but also a national treasure, celebrated for its cinematic appearance in the film “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.” Its demise shocked the community, with sentiments expressed that it represented a loss more profound than just a natural resource. Sarah Dodd, a lawyer specialized in tree law, emphasized its status, stating, “This wasn’t just a tree.” The pub manager from a nearby establishment recounted personal stories linked to the tree, highlighting its emotional significance to those who had gathered there over the years.

Following a lengthy trial, Graham and Carruthers, who denied the charges, are scheduled to be sentenced on July 15. Prosecutors described their actions as “mindless” and likened the crime to “arboreal equivalent of mindless thuggery.” The tree’s removal has left a void, underscoring its role as a cherished part of the local landscape and history, especially for those who commemorated personal milestones there.
