Mason Taylor Aims to Make His Own Mark with the New York Jets
By Dennis Waszak Jr.
Mason Taylor, son of Hall of Famer Jason Taylor, is ready to step into the spotlight as a second-round draft pick for the New York Jets following his collegiate success at LSU. Arriving at rookie minicamp, Taylor acknowledged the weight of expectations linked to his famous last name but expressed pride in his family legacy.
“There’s high expectations, for sure, just because of the last name,” he stated. “But I love it. We’re family.” The Jets’ rookie hopes to carve his own path in the NFL, following in the footsteps of his esteemed father, a legendary pass rusher with 139.5 career sacks, and his uncle, Pro Football Hall of Famer Zach Thomas.
Reflecting on childhood memories of attending Jets games wearing a No. 99 jersey and a green Mohawk, Mason noted that transitioning into his new role feels surreal. He aims to emulate the work ethic of his relatives, drawing inspiration from their journeys from less-known prospects to NFL greats.
Jason Taylor shared emotional moments following his son’s draft and provided advice to Mason before his rookie camp. “Just be where your feet are, take it one step at a time,” Mason recalled from his father’s message.
At LSU, Mason accumulated 129 receptions, 1,308 yards, and six touchdowns, making him one of the most productive tight ends in school history. As he joins a tight end group that includes Jeremy Ruckert and Zack Kuntz, Taylor is eager to prove himself in the Jets’ revamped offense.
“I look forward to showing the coaches and players what I can bring to the team,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to seizing opportunities in training and gameplay. The Jets are poised to rely on his contributions as they seek to improve their fortunes this season.
