Benjamin Boys Lacrosse Secures Repeat State Championship with Thrilling Comeback

NAPLES, FL — The Benjamin boys lacrosse team clinched its second consecutive Class 1A state championship on Saturday, defeating St. Andrew’s 14-11 at Paradise Sports Complex. The victory solidifies Benjamin’s status as a national powerhouse, finishing the season with a remarkable 24-1 record and holding the top spot in MaxPreps rankings.

After trailing 6-3 at halftime, Benjamin mounted a fierce comeback in the second half, fueled by strong performances from seniors Jayden Vega and Alex Ponhock, who scored five and four goals, respectively. “It was a different challenge after having a taste of the championship last year,” said head coach Peter Cordrey. The Buccaneers significantly turned the tide by outscoring St. Andrew’s 7-1 in the pivotal third quarter.

Vega, who is set to continue his lacrosse career at Brown University, emphasized the team’s unity and the importance of the moment. "We knew what was on the table with a chance to go back-to-back. Our bonding was key," he noted.

This championship marked the third victory over St. Andrew’s this season for Benjamin, having previously won 17-11 and 15-12 in earlier matchups. St. Andrew’s coach Tony Seaman acknowledged the Buccaneers’ prowess, particularly highlighting their goalie’s performance during the game.

In the Class 2A state championship, St. Thomas Aquinas also celebrated success, defeating Ponte Vedra 13-4, powered by junior Diego Salazar’s seven goals. The triumph adds a fourth state title to St. Thomas Aquinas’ history, showcasing their strong team chemistry and resilience throughout the season.

With both teams excelling, the Florida lacrosse scene continues to thrive, showcasing top-tier talent and competitive spirit.
